Your community may be experiencing flooding. Please be aware that Broward county has announced a flash flood warning and there will be uncontrollable flooding. As a result of the quantity of rain brought on by Tropical Storm, the lakes and ground have saturated beyond their usual capacity. Drainage in our area is handled by 2 methods:
1. Gravity-fed drains that lead stormwater runoff to the lakes.
2. Water draining through the ground into the natural Aquifer.
When we experience rain to the extent we recently did, the lake's capacity can be exceeded, resulting in water flowing back to the property. This excessive quantity of rain also affects what is known as the water table. When the ground is oversaturated, it cannot accept any more water until the water table is lowered.
What happens next? The South Broward Drainage District prepares in advance for these situations and has remote access to many of the lift stations in the area to help lower lake levels. Drainage of these lakes takes place automatically by the Drainage District, however, it is important to understand that they work closely with other drainage districts to accomplish this. Drainage in this area goes towards canals in the East which leads to the ocean. This process requires drainage of the lower levels to accommodate the water from the West.
The drains in all of the communities we manage, are "Gravity Fed".This means that the water will flow to them via the pitch/slope of the community swales, roads, and construction. Because they flow into the lake, once the lake is full, there is nowhere else for it to go. There is no pump pulling the water from the surface. As such, the drains have not "stopped working", the water just doesn't have anywhere to drain to.
Rest assured that this process is taking place, and only requires your continued patience while this is coordinated. Please be safe and follow the precautions below from Broward County.
Please be safe and follow the precautions below from Broward County.
*Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.
*Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses
as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.
*Please report flooding to your local law enforcement agency when you
can do so safely.
*A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring.
*If you are in the warned area move to higher ground immediately.
Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate
precautions to protect life and property
